Peanut, Peanut Butter! (and Chili?)

Every time I go home, I ask my mom to make this Peanut Butter Chili Recipe. The tradition started this past summer, after I had been away from home for 7 months. For two of those months, I was working in a hotel in Jasper National Park and, every day, I had to serve chili to people...chili full of meat. One day, a strong wif of the chili hit me and I thought "that would go well with peanut butter."

When I got near a computer, I Googled for peanut butter chili recipes and found that indeed, they exist! I e-mailed the one I thought sounded most appealing to my mom, with the special request of having her make it for my first dinner at home, which is exactly what she did (thanks mom). I loved it and so the tradition continues.

Part of the tradition is that my mom always makes I've never actually made this recipe myself, though I have plenty of experience eating it. When I decided it was something worth sharing, I asked my mom if she does anything particular when she makes it—adds or skips anything, etc...and she said she follows the directions with the most minimal (negligible) of changes—I wrote these in the notes on the recipe below...perhaps a pointless gesture, but oh well, these records are for me too. I will not re-copy the recipe because that would truly be pointless..I instead encourage you to follow the link...and make it...and then tell me if you like it!

The Minimal and Possibly Useless Notes for Making Peanut Butter Chili:
  • Mom uses all—natural, just peanuts peanut butter.
  • She skips all the optional ingredients.
  •  I am not really sure how to describe the taste. It tastes like chili...and peanut butter. If you are wondering, yes, you can tell there is peanut butter in the recipe and I actually like it best when the peanut taste is very strong. It kind of reminds me of Pad Thai...the combination of the spices and the peanut a peanut sauce. Apologies for this terrible description...maybe you'll just have to make it to find out?

Anyways, just thought I'd share my favourite chili eat.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Song

  1. HEYA this makes very nice chilli! The peanut butter really balances out the bitterness of the chilli powder and the cayenne. I also really love how much garlic is in it (3 cloves + 1 tsp of garlic powder!).

    I would make it again!

  2. interesting, i will try for sure

  3. My grand mother used to make the best Peanut Butter Chili. but whenever i try making it, it doesnt taste the same. thanks for all the tips i will follow them properly the next time .
